If you thought you knew the stories of some of the most popular fairy tales, think again. Here are six of the best known tales retold with more than a twist or two, by that master of the comic and the bloodcurdling, Roald Dahl. Review: Library Journal Rice's latest novel is read with considerable skill and feeling by Janet McTeer in this author-approved abridgment (for a review of the unabridged version, see Audio Reviews, LJ 5/15/98). This is the first in a projected series linked together by their connection with David Talbot, a newly created vampire interested in chronicling the lives of the ancient Undead. To this listener, this seemed mostly a retelling of Marius's story from The Vampire Lestat (Audio Reviews, LJ 4/15/95) from a different point of view and dressed up with details from the daily life of a woman of means in ancient Rome and Antioch. Though the abridged work will be enjoyed by Rice's fans, listeners will be better served by the unabridged text. Missing here are the identification with the victim, the paradox of the thrill of, and revulsion for, the blood, and the expressions of vampire angst that gave dimension and promoted interest in the personas of Lestat and Marius elsewhere, likely also to Pandora in longer versions of this work. A worthy purchase for time-pressed patrons.
