Peter and the Starcatchers - Dave Barry (CD)
Title: R is for Ricochet Title: Peter and the Starcatchers Author: Dave Barry Genre: Fiction / Adventure / Childrens Format: 6 CDs. 7 hrs. (Unabridged) Synopsis: In an evocative and fast-paced adventure on the high seas and on a faraway island an orphan boy named Peter and his mysterious new friend, Molly, overcome bands of pirates and thieves in their quest to keep a fantastical secret safe and save the world from evil. Bestselling authors Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson have turned back the clock and revealed a wonderful story that precedes J. M. Barries beloved Peter Pan. Peter and the Starcatchers is brimming with richly developed characters from the scary but somehow familiar Black Stache and the ferocious Mister Grin to the sweet but sophisticated Molly and the fearless Peter. Riveting adventure takes listeners on a journey from a harsh orphanage in old England to a treacherous sea in a decrepit old tub. Aboard the Never Land is a trunk that holds a magical substance with the power to change the fate of the world - just a sprinkle and wounds heal and just a dusting and people can fly. Towering seas and a violent storm are the backdrop for battles at sea. Bone-crushing waves eventually land our characters on Mollusk Island - where the action really heats up. Review: Horn Book Magazine (September 1, 2004) In a story explaining how Peter Pan, the Lost Boys, and Captain Hook all ended up in Never Land, Peter and the boys are orphans, traveling on a decrepit ship to Rundoon, where they will become servants to King Zarboff -- who has a nasty habit of feeding his servants to his snake. Also on board is a girl named Molly, a Starcatcher; Starcatchers are people (and porpoises) who try to prevent "starstuff" (think fairy dust) from falling into the wrong hands. Through a series of unlikely events, the greatly feared pirate Black Stache (so-called for his mustache) captures the Never Land in an attempt to get the "greatest treasure ever taken to sea," but Peter and Molly jettison the chest containing the starstuff just as a huge storm destroys the Never Land. Somehow they all end up on Mollusk Island, where they fight amongst themselves -- as well as with the island's inhabitants and a group of mermaids (created by starstuff) -- to gain control of the treasure. The book is slow and not nearly as funny as it wants to be; too many plot twists and numerous heavily stereotyped characterizations mar what could have been a wild pirate adventure.
