On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft - Stephen King (CD)
Title: Against All Enemies: Inside America's War on Terror Title: On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft Author: Stephen King Genre: Literary Criticism, General Format: CDs (Unabridged) Synopsis: "If you don't have the time to read, you don't have the time or the tools to write." Here is Stephen King's master class on his craft. On Writing begins with a mesmerizing account of King's childhood and his early focus on writing to tell a story. A series of vivid memories from adolescence, college, and the struggling years that led up to his first novel, Carrie, offer a fresh and often funny perspective on the formation of a writer. King then turns to the tools of his trade, examining crucial aspects of the wriiter's art and life, offering practical and inspiring advice on everything from plot and character development to work habits and rejection. King was in the middle of writing this book when he was nearly killed in a widely reported accident. On Writing culminates with a profoundly moving account of how his need to write spurred him toward recovery, and brought him back to his life. Review: Library Journal (October 15, 2001) King's critics say he is crass, low-brow, ber-male, and foul-mouthed. It is all true. These are the qualities of the phenomenally successful writer of works of horror on which his legion of fans gorge themselves. But cut through the macho veneer, and the listener will also catch glimpses, in this audiobook, of another King, devoted husband and father, a pussycat who loves the American way of life and who produced such sensitive stories as "The Body." So, one may go from revulsion in the early memoir portion of the book, to respect in the middle part, on writing the author started out as a teacher, and he is still a teacher to utter sympathy as he describes the awful accident and aftermath that was partially responsible for the delay in this book's publication. One also grows to respect the bald nature of King's statements of truth as he sees it. In addition, the writing section alone, with pearls such as "second draft equals first draft minus ten percent," is worth it. Recommended for all popular collections. Mark Pumphrey, Polk Cty.
