Mama - Terry McMillan (CD)
Title: Against All Enemies: Inside America's War on Terror Title: Mama Author: Terry McMillan Genre: Literature and Fiction, General Format: CDs (Unabridged) Synopsis: "It ain't that I don't believe in God. I just don't trust his judgment." Mildred Peacock is a survivor who will do anything to keep her family together. Review: Booklist (January 1, 1987) Uneven pacing and obtrusive sociological commentary put considerable strain on first novelist Terry McMillan's narrative. On the other hand, we ultimately care about her characters poor black residents of a small Michigan town. ``Mama'' Mildred raises her family of five very different children through several husbands and too many ups and downs to count. Her children grow up, marry, have their own children, and move across the country and back again. Mildred can't seem to settle down either. She's always looking for a better man, a better time, a little more money. She loves her kids, but she's so worn out she can hardly show it. Eventually all the kids and Mildred each show their best and worst sides, which makes them realistic and memorable. McMillan's got her finger on the way people act, even if the news isn't all good.
