Black Notice - Patricia Cornwell (CD)
Title: Against All Enemies: Inside America's War on Terror Title: Black Notice Author: Patricia Cornwell Genre: Literature and Fiction, Mystery And Suspense Format: CDs (Abridged) Synopsis: When a badly-decomposed body is discovered at the Richmond docks, Chief Medical Examiner Scarpetta is puzzled by the evidence. Her search for his identity will lead Scarpetta to a confrontation with her most monstrous villain of her career. Review: Library Journal (November 15, 1999) Cornwell (Southern Cross) brings chief medical examiner Kay Scarpetta back for her tenth foray into crime-solving in Black Notice. When the unidentified remains of a badly decomposed body are found in a cargo container en route from Belgium, Scarpetta is pulled into a case of global significance. Once again, her professional worries are exacerbated by personal concerns for pal Marino and niece Lucy. The investigation takes Scarpetta around the world and into the sights of powerful and ruthless enemies. Reader Kate Reading's nearly flawless performance compensates for the book's sometimes plodding pace. She gives her usually low-key characterization of the usually low-key Scarpetta just the right edge as flashes of despair threaten to overtake her controlled life. Although Reading thoroughly becomes Scarpetta through her expert narration, she has other strengths, as well. Her interpretation of each minor charactersome appearing only once or twicebreathes life into individuals who, in the hands of a less competent reader, would otherwise blend and vanish from memory. Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information. Library Journal (July 1, 1999) "Black Notice" is a designation given by Interpol to unidentified corpses with possible international ties. Cornwell's tenth novel, featuring Kay Scarpetta, begins with the discovery of a decomposed body among the cargo of a Belgian ship that has just docked at Richmond, VA. Shortly thereafter, Scarpetta is called to the scene of a grisly murder. As she and police captain Pete Marino work to solve the case, it becomes apparent that this murder is linked to several others in France and to the body from the ship. This novel focuses on the features that made Cornwell's earliest novels so interestingthe slow unraveling of a mystery using Scarpetta's skill and intelligence rather than the increasingly unbelievable plot lines and tired characters of her later books. It is Cornwell's best novel in this series in a while, and fans of her work should enjoy it immensely. Copyright 1999 Cahners Business RInformation.
